Washington’s year of drama leaves little done regarding debt

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

Reid Ribble , a Wisconsin roofing contractor-turned-Republican lawmaker, has helped change the way Washington talks about the national debt. That’s not to say he has done much about the debt itself. Nearly a year ago, Ribble and other newly elected House Republicans came to Capitol Hill on a single-minded mission to shove the federal debt to the top of the congressional agenda. They succeeded. At every opportunity, they demanded cuts in spending, forcing a series of white-knuckle showdowns that have kept the government in a state of perpetual crisis. Washington nudged close to a public conversation about the kind of government taxpayers want and what they are willing to pay for it. Read full article > >

First Person Singular: ‘Real World’ star Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.)

Friday, October 14th, 2011

As far as I know, I’m the first reality star to be elected as a congressman. “Hollywood Duffy” is the image the Democrat Party would like to push on me because I did reality TV . The truth is that I was born in northern Wisconsin, raised in northern Wisconsin and came back to raise my kids in northern Wisconsin. When I did my commercials for my campaign, I did them using lumberjack sports where I was chopping, talking about “taking an ax to Washington.” I did logrolling to talk about how politicians were “dunking our kids, our workers and our seniors.” And there were no stunt doubles. So, when people were hearing the claim that I was “Hollywood Sean Duffy,” they were like: What? He’s a lumberjack! He’s from Wisconsin! What are you talking about? I’m all Wisconsin. Friday, October 7th, 2011

In “The Breakfast Club,” a geeky high school student played by Anthony Michael Hall says he procured a fake ID not to buy beer, but to vote. But are new photo ID laws in Alabama, Kansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin really necessary to stop widespread fraud like that perpetrated by a John Hughes character? Or are photo ID laws just another conservative scheme to oppress young people and minorities and limit Democratic turnout? Let’s put aside what we think we know about the ballot box and find out.
