Poor Central Asians migrate to Moscow

Friday, September 16th, 2011

MOSCOW — In a tiny hut in the woods where he survives without fixed address or running water, Abdul Malik keeps a neatly pressed suit hanging on the wall above his thin mattress, an emblem of the respectable life that should have been his, destroyed by the aftershocks of the Soviet planned economy. Malik, a 22-year-old from Tajikistan, was only 2 when the Soviet Union disintegrated under its own unsupportable weight in 1991, leaving outposts of the far-flung empire stranded economically, many in the future generations doomed to destitution. Tiger Woods struggles to worst round ever at PGA Championship

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

JOHNS CREEK, GA. — When Tiger Woods stuffed his approach shot to within three feet of the pin Thursday morning at Atlanta Athletic Club’s 14th hole, the full brunt of a brutally hot day hadn’t yet settled over the course, and there was no telling what was to come in the first round of the PGA Championship . I’m not at that point where I can do that yet.” Read full article > >

A wide-open U.S. Open

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

When Padraig Harrington closed out his victory in the 2008 PGA Championship, the golf world was in something of a working order. Tiger Woods ’s enthralling victory on one healthy leg in that summer’s U.S. Open still enveloped the sport. Even with Woods on the sidelines healing up, Harrington seemed a worthy player to fill the void. Golf, back then, had a nice, settled, star-filled order: Woods was the No. 1 player in the world. Phil Mickelson and Harrington, with three major championships apiece at that point, ranked second and third. Sergio Garcia and Vijay Singh , two of the most recognizable faces in the international game, ranked fourth and fifth. The group of favorites for any major championship was easily identified.
