SantaCon: Naughty or nice? (photos)

Monday, December 12th, 2011

To some, SantaCon is a merry expression of holiday cheer, and a good way to make friends while getting into the Christmas spirit. To others, it’s the worst kind of flash mob: drunk, garishly costumed people who think they’re way funnier than they actually are. SantaCon, the event where folks dressed as Santa Claus go on a holiday bar crawl, is a love-it-or-hate-it holiday tradition, with observers strongly divided between “naughty” and “nice.” Read full article > >

Maryland football thought nothing could top dismal 2009 season, until this year

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Some Maryland players said it felt like a dark cloud hovered over their team house during the entire 2009 season. Heart-wrenching losses, unforeseen injuries and overall misfortune marred a 10-loss season that they felt was the worst football experience they would ever endure. Then came this season. A loss Saturday at North Carolina State would give Maryland (2-9, 1-6 ACC) its second 10-loss season in the past three years. All factors considered, some veterans have said this season has been worse than the 2009 season that nearly cost then-Coach Ralph Friedgen his job. Read full article > >

Stocks fall in light trading session as Europe fears linger; Dow drops 4.8 percent for week

Friday, November 25th, 2011

NEW YORK — The worst week for the stock market in two months ended with a whimper in thin trading Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 4.8 percent this week, while the broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 4.7 percent. Both had their worst weeks since Sept. 23. Major indexes wavered throughout Friday’s session, which was shortened because it’s the day after Thanksgiving. Worries about Europe’s debt crisis flared up again after Italy had to pay 7.8 percent to borrow for two years at a debt auction. It’s another sign that investors are increasingly hesitant to lend to European countries. Read full article > >

After five straight dismal performances, the Washington Redskins broke out of their funk Sunday to put on one of their best offensive showings of the season and nearly end the worst losing streak of Coach Mike Shanahan’s career. But in the end the result was the same, as the Dallas Cowboys escaped FedEx Field with a 27-24 overtime victory in a fierce rivalry game that marked the first time since 1998 the Redskins have been defeated six straight times. Israeli airstrike kills militant in fresh Gaza violence

JERUSALEM — An Israeli airstrike killed a Palestinian militant in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, the latest lethal attack in two days of fighting that have left 10 militants and one Israeli civilian dead. Chaz Bono eliminated from ‘Dancing With the Stars’

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Finally, some “Dancing With the Stars” controversy. It’s been a relatively quiet season, but the blogosphere lit up Tuesday after Maks and Len exchanged harsh words Monday night. Len said Maks and Hope’s dance was the worst of the season; Maks said Len should get out of the dance industry. Oh, and Maks added that “this is my show,” which surely went over great with his fellow pro dancers. Read full article > >

Redskins-Eagles: Shanahan says this year’s team won’t be affected by last year’s debacle

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Before the Washington Redskins began practice and the installation of their game plan for the Philadelphia Eagles , they gathered for their weekly team meeting.  Coach Mike Shanahan can’t hide from last year’s debacle against the Eagles. But he certainly didn’t want his players dwelling on it. Just like last year, the Redskins meet the Eagles coming out of a bye week, which means they essentially had an extra week to rest, study and prepare. They’re hoping for a different result this time. Last November, the Eagles came to FedEx Field and dismembered the Redskins, 59-28 , in one of the worst losses in Washington history. Read full article > >
