GOP primary divides Washington socialites

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

If you thought all the political action is in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, think again: The race is heating up here in Washington social circles. No drama for Democrats officially rallying together to re-elect President Obama . More interesting to watch: D.C.’s prominent Republicans who are trying to cozy up to the party’s nominee. Back the right horse early enough and you get four years hanging out with the winner. Pick the loser and . . .well, you picked the loser: After George W. Bush prevailed in the 2000 GOP primaries, early backers of John McCain were quietly snubbed by Bush insiders. Read full article > >

U.S. pulls advisers from Afghan press center it funds

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

KABUL — After funding and supporting the Afghan government’s press center for more than four years, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul announced Wednesday that it has withdrawn its advisers from the center amid concerns over the way it is being run. The office, known as the Government Media and Information Center (GMIC), has become politicized in recent months, according to Afghan and Western officials, as pro- and anti-American factions within the Afghan government have sought to use its visibility to push certain causes. How much does organization really matter in Iowa?

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Is organization overrated? Every time you turn on cable news or read a blog, you can’t help but hear talk about how important it is for a presidential candidate to have a large and well-funded political organization to win the all-important Iowa caucuses. And yet, former House speaker Newt Gingrich , the Iowa front-runner with just 22 days left before the caucuses, has — at best — a spartan political organization in the state. And four years ago, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee beat out his far more professionally organized rivals to claim victory in the Hawkeye State. Read full article > >

Tianna and Tierra Hawkins had been teammates for most of their lives. Except for the one summer when they were on separate AAU teams, the fraternal twins from Clinton played together through their years at Riverdale Baptist High. In college, however, the sisters went their separate ways. Tianna ended up at Maryland , while Tierra went to Delaware State . Both have flourished. Tianna averages a double-double for the fifth-ranked Terrapins, and Tierra leads the Lady Hornets in scoring and rebounding. Read full article > >

Primatologist Jane Goodall, 77, talks about how chimps and humans age

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Jane Goodall, 77, has been studying chimpanzees for most of her life. Encouraged by famed anthropologist Louis Leakey and only 26 years old, Goodall set up camp in Gombe National Park in Tanzania to observe a group of wild chimps up close. She is credited with discovering that chimps use tools, are not vegetarians, care for one another and sometimes use violence against other chimps. She has also used her years of research — and hers is one of the longest scientific research projects in the world — to show how closely related humans and chimps are. Read full article > >

Republican hopefuls make pitch at Huckabee forum

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, facing increased scrutiny as he solidifies his standing atop the Republican presidential field, sought to convince conservatives in a forum Saturday night that he would not stray from a limited-government philosophy. Asked why conservatives should trust that he won’t advance “big government approaches,” given his history of supporting an individual health-care mandate, climate change policies and a larger federal role in education policy, Gingrich said it was his years in Washington that made him best-suited to transform government.
