A request by Yemen’s former president to enter the United States for medical treatment remained in flux Tuesday, with Yemeni officials saying a U.S. visa has been approved but the Obama administration insisting it is still considering the matter. Ali Abdullah Saleh, who relinquished power to his vice president Friday, told reporters over the weekend in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, that he was planning to come to the United States to relieve tension after nine people were killed by government forces during mass protests related to the end of Saleh’s 33-year rule. Yemen: Tribal elders say son of slain Yemeni-American al-Awlaki among dead in US airstrike

SANAA, Yemen — Tribal elders say the son of slain U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed in a U.S. missile strike along with six other al-Qaida militants, including the media chief of the terror group’s Yemeni branch. The elders in the southeastern province of Shabwa where the strike took place identified the son as 21-year-old Abdul-Rahman al-Awlaki. At least 15 killed in Yemeni capital as shelling continues

SANAA, Yemen — Renewed violence in the Yemeni capital killed at least 15 people Thursday as forces loyal to the regime and its opponents shelled each other’s strategic positions from hills surrounding the city, medical and security officials said. The shelling over Sanaa has terrified residents and emptied the streets, already pockmarked by ground battles between rival forces based in different corners of the capital. Some of the the strikes, carried out by the military’s Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) , have been focused in the southern part of the country, where insurgent forces have for the first time conquered and held territory as the Yemeni government continues to struggle against escalating opposition to President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s 33-year rule.
