NEW YORK — A woman burned to death in the elevator of her Brooklyn apartment building Saturday after a man ambushed her, sprayed her with liquid and set her afire with a Molotov cocktail, police said. The unidentified man was waiting for 64-year-old Doris Gillespie, when the elevator doors opened to her floor of the Prospect Heights building. The man sprayed her with an accelerant and set her on fire, New York City police spokesman Paul Browne said. Read full article > >

NEW YORK — One of the world’s largest Apple stores is opening at the landmark Grand Central Terminal. The 23,000-square-foot personal electronics business will start selling to the public on Friday. The owner of the space, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the city’s bus and subway system, says Apple Inc. is paying $180 per square foot for its lease — slightly less than the $200-per-square-foot top rate at the century-old Manhattan train hub. NEW YORK — A passenger accused of punching a JetBlue flight attendant who tried to stop him from drinking will be facing a judge in New York City. Antonio Ynoa is due in Brooklyn federal court on Monday. Authorities say off-duty NYPD Officer Anibal Mercado subdued and handcuffed the intoxicated man during the incident early Sunday. NEW YORK — During the first two months of the nationwide Occupy protests, the movement that is demanding more out of the wealthiest Americans cost local taxpayers at least $13 million in police overtime and other municipal services, according to a survey by The Associated Press. The heaviest financial burden has fallen upon law enforcement agencies tasked with monitoring marches and evicting protesters from outdoor camps. NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg says an al-Qaida sympathizer who plotted to bomb police and post offices in New York City has been arrested. Bloomberg announced Sunday the arrest of 27-year-old Jose Pimentel on numerous charges. Pimentel was arrested Saturday. Verlander got all 28 first-place votes from members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in results announced Tuesday. NEW YORK — The executive hired to turn around Newsweek magazine has left after 11 months. Ray Chelstowski, who served as publisher of Newsweek and The Daily Beast website, ended his tenure Monday. He had come from Entertainment Weekly magazine to oversee an effort to boost ad sales at Newsweek. Executive Editor Edward Felsenthal and Tom Weber, the magazine’s managing editor, also resigned Monday.
