Before you even consider using your brand new vessel out for a cruise on the sea it is in your own best concern to undergo a boat safety course and have a boat safety review to look for the mandatory safety devices. The US Coast Guard can offer you with a list of compulsory and suggested boat safety equipment.
Life vests, or personal floating tools as they are formally called, should be easily available for every passenger of the vessel. They must also be adjusted to the built of the individual who is intended to wear them in case of an emergency. They must be in good working condition with all the straps and clips situated properly and usable. It is a great suggestion to have them fitted to the passengers so that if needed they can be put on without much further adjusting. In some states there is a minimum age for which the putting on of a life vest is needed every time.
As a large factor of boating safety there should also be present on board a recently checked fire extinguisher. It should be distinctly labelled so that anybody can spot it if necessary and get to it quickly. There are varied kinds of fire extinguishers, engineered to extinguish different types of fires. For boating safety it is suggested to get a Type B or C fire extinguisher, these are designed for putting out fires initiated or fuelled by oil, grease and gas, or electrical fires.
As a last factor of boating safety, particularly for boats with gasoline engines and specifically when the engine is mounted in the vessel, good wind circulation is cardinal.
Not only to keep away from any development of carbon monoxide, threatening the crew with poisoning, but also to avoid gasoline smoke from building up and turning into a dangerous fire hazard.
